Increased tropical forest growth could release CO2

20.12.2011 -

Carbon dioxide stimulates trees to grow faster. However, according to a study of the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology at the University of Cambridge this high carbon concentration also causes more foliage on the forest ground. Additionally, the CO2 in it is released in a shorter time. A reason for this is that the high supply with carbon animates soil bacteria to disintegrate it faster. At the same time more foliage is caused by the higher CO2 concentration in the soil again and forces up the carbon content. The study shows that interaction between plants and soil massively influences the processing of CO2.
