Extension of operational life span for nuclear power plants

05.10.2010 - Protection de l’environnement

Nuclear reactors will on average run about twelve years longer. The added profits of the operators will partially flow into the extension of renewable energies, helping to enter the age of renewable energies earlier. The decision is disputed. According to the recent concept for the nuclear phaseout, the last nuclear power plant would run until 2035, overruling the fomer law passed by the social democrats and the green party which would have the last nuclear power plant switched off by 2022. Therefore, the operators have to increase the facilities’ safety arrangements. The German federal environment minister Norbert Röttgen expects investments of 500 to 600 million Euros per facility.
