Green electricity for Europe
In forty years' time Europe's power could be generated exclusively from wind, sun, and other renewable sources, according to a report from the accountancy firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC).
The report was prepared by researchers from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), and the European Climate Forum, among others. It also looks at the technological, economic, and political framework necessary to bring about this change: An intelligent power network to transport electricity over long distances, as would be required for solar power from the Sahara or wind power from the North Sea, is as important as the phasing out of subsidies for fossil fuels. Also required are economic incentives and, of course, the political will to change.
