Economic crisis protects climate
Compared with the previous year, the emission of greenhouse gases dropped by around 80 million metric tons in 2009, 68 million tons thereof being carbon dioxide. This is the result of initial calculations by the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA). “This reduction is mainly due to the economic crisis,” explained German Environment Minister Norbert Röttgen. “But our aim is to achieve growth through climate protection. That is why we will continue to promote the expansion of renewable energies and energy efficiency, as the only way to combine durable climate protection with economic growth.”
